when the world PANICS
A timely tale wherein Lilly overcomes her worry and finds strategies to help her cope with the global pandemic, COVID-19. Worry is all that fills Lilly’s thoughts, even when she is having fun adventures with her brother, Lyndon. With encouragement and support from her parents, and a special distanced video call with her Grandma, Lilly learns: I am safe, I am loved, I am healthy.
This book deals with the emotional toll COVID-19 is having on children. It is by no means a medical book or a book to teach health guidelines and protocols. However, it is an excellent resource for helping children navigate their feelings and the mental health aspects of a global pandemic.
A delightful read-aloud with striking full-page colour illustrations, When the World Panics, is suitable for kindergarten through grade 5.

Lilly’s story in When the World Panics is one that young readers could easily relate to in times of stress. The illustrations are just adorable, and the text is written in clear and kid-friendly language. It could be used to foster discussions about mindful breathing, positive affirmations, or managing anxiety. After reading the book, children could also brainstorm people that they can go to for support. For teachers doing online learning during Covid-19 pandemic, this story would be a great anchor text for cardboard box STEM projects.
I’d recommend it for elementary-age students.

Lilly tries to make sense of a world that is panicking. Everyone’s short-tempered and worried about the future. School is suddenly closed. How can she make sense of this new world without getting bored and not being able to visit with family and friends? What can she do to keep herself from panicking? Children will easily relate to this story during the current pandemic. The illustrations are delightful and brilliantly show how Lilly deals with the unexpected changes in her daily life.

When the World Panics is a comforting story that teaches children to take the time to breathe and to find joy in the little things. I look forward to using this story to teach problem-solving skills, mindfulness, and self-love to young readers to come.

As an early elementary teacher I feel this is an excellent book to share with my class. It helps students reflect on the challenges of the pandemic and understand/ learn coping tools in to deal with hard situations. A great lesson in perseverance! It is wonderfully written, with beautiful illustrations to boot!
